A Fine USB-C Hub for Portability (Adapts to Work on non USB-C Laptops, too!)
I had been wanting to get a USB-C hub to use with my new MacBook Pro when I’m away from my usual desk (I’m a big fan of Caldigit Thunderbolt docks for my main work area). Because of early issues with USB-C devices with power delivery frying computers if they were wired incorrectly, I wanted to get one that was from a brand I trusted, and since Vava is a sister brand to RavPower (which is second only to Anker in my go to list for chargers and cables), I felt safe trying this one.My main reasons for wanting this particular hub boiled down to needing USB-A ports on my USB-C MacBook Pro and wanting a USB ethernet adapter for when I’m doing video streaming and don’t want to depend on wi-fi. This serves both of those purposes for me. Ethernet connectivity was great and didn’t give me any hiccups — it was immediately detected and connected at gigabit speeds on my MacBook Pro. Likewise, I tested it with my external SSD (which, coincidentally, is from RavPower) and it worked at only a slightly slower speed than when connected directly (see my second screenshot). Reading an SD card didn't reach the maximum rated card speed, but was reasonably fast.Update (July 20, 2020): I purchased a very cheap USB-C to USB-A adapter (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0834Z2SRB/) so that I could use this hub with my older laptop, too. I didn't test video, and I suspect that may not work, but the other functions do! It works great as a USB 3.x hub and gigabit Ethernet adapter on a non-USB-C laptop. This is handy so that I don't need a separate hub for my newer and older equipment. I get the benefits of USB-C on my new MacBook Pro and still get a fine hub for my old MacBook Pro.Back to the original review: A few caveats that aren’t anything wrong with the hub, per se, but are worth being aware of: watch out — one of the USB ports is USB 2.0. They did say this upfront, but if you aren’t paying attention, you might end up accidentally using this port that features a much slower transfer speed since it looks almost indistinguishable from the two USB 3.0 ports on the opposite side of the device -- the only indication it isn't USB 3.0 is the lack of the blue coloration of the connector that PC (but not Mac) USB 3.0 ports use (the first screenshot shows the transfer speeds from that slower port). Likewise, the USB-C PD port, for passing power through the hub to your USB-C computer for charging, so that one connector can connect your computer to the hub and power, is really made only to do that, not to allow you to daisy chain more USB-C devices. While I was able to connect a USB-C device to it, I only got USB 2.0 speeds, not USB 3.0/3.2 speeds. Again, the product information doesn’t suggest anything different from what I observed, but if you aren't paying attention, you might miss those details and get excited that it has a USB-C port. I debated if either of these issues merited lowering the rating, but since the description is clear, the hub /does/ do what it advertises. Just pay attention to what it advertises.Full disclosure: I had the opportunity to get a review promotion on this unit, which I already had been seriously considering (after seeing the Wirecutter’s recommendation for it), so I jumped. I've spent time as a journalist in the past, so I'll only review something if there are no conditions on what I say about it and I can be upfront on these things. This is my actual opinion on this product, unaffected by said promo.
Great USB-C Hub
This product is great. I have tested all ports and all work great, with the exception of the RJ45 port because I do not have a cable run to my desk. Worked with both my Dell Ultrabook and my Macbook Pro.Pros:- HDMI displays perfect on my 4K TV.- Supplying power from my laptop charger to the hub allows for sufficient power for all hubs and charging of my laptop -- charging speed was not an issue.- USB 3.0 hubs transfer at proper speeds- Card reader is a nice convenience although most laptops have card readers at this point.Cons:- I would like cable that connects to the laptop to be a bit longer to make connecting things to the hub easier. With the length that is it is no more convenience to use the hub than the ports on the PC -- but this may not be an issue for all users.- This has 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 -- I'm not sure why a product would include USB 2.0 at this point, but I suppose you can always use it for a keyboard/mouse dongle or something that is not transferring data.I would recommend this product.
This is what you call a quality product
The first thing I did when I got the hub was to check if all of the ports were working, and indeed they were. I am currently using it with a 2017 macbook pro space grey and the hub matches the color almost perfectly. I think the build material is made of some metal alloy, because while traveling it got a few scuffs but I was able to completely wipe them off with a damp towel. I keep all my peripherals plugged into the hub and love the ability to plug my charger into the hub's USB-C port and then plug the hub into my laptop. This makes cable management a breeze and I only need to work with one cable when docking my laptop at my desk.
Lightweight, portable and versatile device!
This "VAVA USB C HUB" is lighter than another product I bought before, "HDD Docking Station"(see one of the pictures I uploaded), and more portable, because I can simply put it directly in my computer bag, its size is smaller than the mouse (see one of the pictures I uploaded), so I can take it anywhere I need it (For traveling) and it won't take up too much space. Besides, it can be connected to several devices at the same time, for example, I connected a "WD portable passport"( a kind of external hard drive), an SD card, a keyboard, a mouse, and external HP monitor(used HDMI port). Using it so far, there is no such thing as the "HDD Docking Station" I purchased previously, as long as several devices are connected at the same time, my laptop may suddenly get stuck or even disconnected from my computer. So I personally think this product is very good.
Works great on Pixelbook. Don't use on 2015 MacBooks
I bought this for my wife to use in her MacBook. I must have missed warnings that said not to use it with that model; first time she plugged it in, it froze her computer and made it unusable until she did a keyboard shortcut reset (shut down, connect to power, hold shift+Ctrl+Option+Power).Tried it on my Pixelbook however and it works perfectly. Makes my TV into a second screen with no lag and great picture quality.
Premium USB-C Hub
I had an existing USB Hub with some of the same features, but since I am transitioning to a laptop without a USB port it was a good time to upgrade my equipment. The VAVA hub is a top quality product. This evident from the nice packaging and the professional instruction book. The hub itself is super snazzy. It is made of metal and has a nice heft to it, not at all like the cheap plastic hubs I am used to that always stop working at a crucial moment. The top of the hub is attractive with VAVA written in lettering reminiscent of a Sony Vaio. The bottom of it is not as smooth and is intended to be non slip. The hub includes the following connections:Ethernet Port - top endSides:2 USB 3.0 portsSD 3.0 portMicro SD 3.0 portUSB power delivery portUSB 2.0 portHDMI 4K portThe USB-C connector is around 6 inches long. This is nice because if there are other plugs next to it on the laptop you can plug accessories in to them while using this hub. Others I have had did not include the connector cable and could not be used while adjacent plugs were occupied.This hub can be used with Windows, Mac, UNIX and Chromebook. On my Windows 10 laptop it worked without any issues. Note that this hub is not recommended to be used for charging phones.I did a quick speed test against a USB Hub with an SD Card reader. The USB-C hub was about 12% faster when transferring several gigs of RAW files.
Does what it is supposed to do, though a bit of finesse is required.
This hub does what it is advertised to do, and seems to be well built.Pros:It just works.It's small enough to be excellent for traveling.It replaces at least three adapters - four, if you use an ethernet adapter.Finicky points:(1.) I found that inserting a micro SD card while an external USB-A drive was connected through this hub caused my MacBook Pro to lose its connection to the external hard drive. I did not have that problem with a regular-size SD card.(2.) When I used an HDMI cable to connect my MacBook Pro to a projector, I found that I had to firmly press the hub (= computer) side of the cable into this hub to get the connection. It was easy to get the MacBook Pro to detect the projector, but more difficult to get the projector to detect the MacBook Pro. I never had this problem with the Apple USB-C multimedia adapter.(3.) According to the hub's tech specs, if you pass power through the hub, the hub consumes some of the available power. Thus my recommendation, at least, would be to plug the power supply directly into one of your other Thunderbolt ports.If I could take off one or two tenths of a star for these three items, I would give this hub a rating of 4.8 or 4.9 rather than 5 stars. But none of these issues seems to be large enough to warrant deducting a full star from the rating. They are just things to be aware of and work around.I would strong recommend this product to others.
Excellent for Covid19 online education for kids, protect eyes
To protect kids from Covid19, the school district lent one 11.8" Chromebook computer to each student in the school district for online education. But child needs to focus on the small 11.8" screen for 6 hours for school classes andseveral additional hours to do home work and after school additional online courses. This will make their eyes sour and pain and hurt the eyes of young kids.Google Chrome Cast could help to cast web pages to TV or bigger desktop computer screen, but Zoom Meeting could not be casted due to different communication protocols being used.Connecting this USB Type C Hub, I could solve all the problems for my beloved son. The ChromeBook and my other laptop could be easily connected to TV or my 28" desktop computer screen without manual software configuration.Zoom Meeting could also be sent to big TV screen or desktop PC monitor. Using the HDMI port on this hub, TV and monitor are treated as the 2nd computer screen, so we could use master/slave mode to use dual screen operation. Thismeans the kids could use big screen (TV or big computer desktop monitor) to show the Zoom Meeting contents, learn from the teacher's online lecture, while at the same time, use ChromeBook or laptop screen to practice and writenotes. It is very convenient and protect eyes by have an additional big screen for the online education!Connect a desktop computer keyboard and mouse to the USB Hub, place them straight in front of the big desktop monitor, kids could sit straight in front of the screen. Otherwise, kids will type on laptop/ChromeBook and turn their headto the 2nd big monitor, this will make their neck pain and hurt their back bone if they sit in incorrect location for months.New laptop and ChromeBook have only WiFi network connection. This USB Hub added one gigabyte RJ45 wired network port. So we could connect ChromeBook/laptop to a router or network switch through wired cable for quick 1GBnetwork connection and lower down the wireless signal radiation.This USB Hub also allow us to connect cellphone to the laptop so we could transfer files between cellphone and laptop while charging the cellphone at the same time.Last but not the least, we could connect SD card or MicroSD card to the laptop/ChromeBook/cellphone through the SD/MicroSD ports on the USB Hub. So it is easy and quick to transfer files and make file backup.This is an excellent product and all my family members like it. I also introduced this device to my friends who also have child taking online courses all-day-long. Thumbs up to the device!!
Amazing USB C Hub
This VAVA USB C hub is my second all in one USB C hub. The first one was from a different maker, was not compatible with my laptop and so I returned it. Then I simply searched in Amazon and checked user reviews and purchase this USB hub.Initially, I was a bit skeptical as I have never purchased any products of this brand before. However, this product has only amazed me since I have received it. My observations are below:1. A perfectly working product. Compatible with my Dell Latitude 5440 and my Xiaomi cellphone.2. 8-in-1. Supports almost everything. I didn't observe any heating too.3. Can support up to 100W.4. Very nice looking. Feels good in the hand and is cozy in the form factor. See attached photos.5. The packaging was very nice. Upon unboxing, the hub looks better in eyes than on this product page. :)I am yet to test all the peripherals. However, I have used USB A, USB C, SD, and Micro SD ports, and those work as expected.I am very much satisfied with this purchase and would like to recommend it. 5/5.
This 8 in 1 USB-C adapter is compact and awesome!
I love that I can connect my computer and also my phone (since they both have usb-c ports) to any display device (tv or computer monitor) that uses HDMI. I have attached pictures of my pc connected to my living room tv via the hdmi port on this 8in1 adapter. I took the pictures with my phone and then connected via the usb-3 on the 8in1 adapter to upload the pictures for this review on my computer.I was also able to connect my phone to my tv and with a mouse and keyboard connected to the 8in1 adapter, was able to turn my phone into a "mini-pc"... surfed the web, watched youtube videos, basically ran all the apps on my phone on the tv screen.This is now my favorite adapter. I'll be picking up an extra one and shelving the others shown in my pictures.
